Vacation Bible School
October 11, 2011 No CommentsVacation Bible School attracted over 600 children, which reflect the population of an average public Primary School. They were divided into groups according to age and classes. It developed 6 groups being taught by Bethel teachers assisted by native helpers:
Rev. George Odhiambo, Mr. Fred Odhiambo, Mr. John Okoth (Substance abuse Counselor), Mr. Samuel Odhiambo, Deac. Mary Okeyo, Deac. Doreen Otieno, Deac. Pamela Juma, Deac. Agnes Otieno, Dorcas (Point of Grace teacher), and Janet (Point of Grace teacher).
Every day children were reporting to school by 7:30 am. The classes were starting by 8:00 am each day. What perplexed the Bethel team was the distance covered by the little children to reach the venue. Some were footing from as far as 4 kilometers braving the morning cold weather. It was quite interesting for the children also to get exposed to the learning and teaching aids, which most of them if not all had never seen before. The children were engaged in a lot of practical lessons with Biblical themes. As we left the venue each day, you could see children wearing their colorful art work around their necks.
The children were mobilized from different faith and religious groups. It is very possible that a new congregation will be born out of this activity. The local teachers and cooks camped at Point of Grace Academy for the five day period, while the Bethel team commuted from Kisumu town every morning. The days usually started with morning devotion at 6:30 am, breakfast was served at 7:20 am for those who camped at Point Of Grace. The children were served with tea or porridge at 10:00 a.m. and also a break for lunch at half past noon. Lunch was served to the little children by the Bethel team. The sessions were quite engaging and interactive and each day’s activity ended with sporting events.
