Another Term of School Begins
May 15, 2011 No CommentsThe second term of school is underway! Many students are returning to the classroom after their month long break. We have been working hard to ensure all of our children, those with sponsors and those without sponsors, are able to return to school. Though we are still a long way from our second term goal, we continue trusting that God will provide according to His perfect will.
The importance of education to orphans has been widely repeated on the CSCM website, facebook page, and newsletter. Why is education so important? When a child’s parents die, they are often absorbed by extended family members or other members of the surrounding community. After witnessing the death and suffering of a parent, children are especially vulnerable to a number of severe problems. Though many extended families are opening up their homes to children, they may be unable to absorb the cost of another child’s educational expenses.
Children are simultaneously losing their parents, their homes, and their chances at receiving an education. Many children find themselves as laborers, working as hard as they can to provide for themselves and their siblings. Or worse, children who are not attending school are at an increased risk for physical and sexual abuse. The death of a child’s parents creates a progressively deteriorating chain of events.
Over the past two years, CSCM has worked hard to improve our Education Support program to reflect our mission of providing “comprehensive care” to orphans and other vulnerable children. We believe that for any project to be successful, the children being cared for need to be at the center.
Those who have visited Africa or other developing areas of the world have probably observed that there is an abundance of inadequate schools. The Kenya educational system continues to be plagued by a lack of teacher training and pay, poor standards of accountability, and a chronic lack of supplies. CSCM works hard to raise enough funding to provide education for our children. We are certainly not going to waste those gifts on inadequate schools!
Over the last two years, we have built relationships with a number of quality schools in Kenya where many of our children attend. Disciples of Mercy Academy has worked to streamline our children who have missed years of school. The children attending Temudo Academy can not wait to return to their new computer class. It is always a joy to visit our boys at Ober Primary School as they show off their smiles and class projects.
When CSCM conducts school visits, we are not only evaluating the well-being of the child, but also the school’s performance. We are proud of how the Education Support Program has developed! We have confidence that the monthly donations of our child sponsors are being wisely invested in the future of our children!
